It is certainly nothing new and within Faces Behind ASEAN SMEs, we see time and time again people who have made difference by doing what they love to do. This time, we are lucky enough to have a talk with Jody Taylor, a Bali-based music producer who started WriteRhythm (CBN-ID000000178), an online platform that connects music writers to the right music labels all over the world. What amazing about the work Jody has done is that he’s done it all from the island dubbed as paradise in Indonesia, Bali, and in its process has serviced 400 record labels.

About the motivation, Jody explained: “If you’re an indie music producers, you write your own music, you will post it on Soundcloud and it goes nowhere. 90% of musicians don’t know what to do next.” It’s not like in a movie, where you get scouted from playing in an open mic session at music cafes, or you go knocking on BMI, Sony Music and its parity’s door presenting them with your music and they immediately want you signed. In a real life, you must send emails after emails and it’s not going to guarantee you these labels’ attention. So, here’s where Jody’s vision coming to their rescue. It is also a big aid for the record labels, in which they can filter the type of music they want to search for for their preferences.

Bagging experiences working the audio visuals for artists like Lady Gaga and Red Hot Chili Peppers, the man who has New Zealand-Indonesia mix in his blood paradoxically shared a story of a young boy from Lithuania who was really interested in trying out the platform. Turned out, he managed to get signed up to a record label. As a token of appreciation, he made Jody a fan art and send it all the way to Bali. Even if his business is a niche, this kind of moment is what keeps Jody going with the business he started back in 2015 with 6 people. It’s only two years but it’s going strong!
